March 11, 1993 - Bezanson, Alberta Age: 34 At 26 years of age, Brent Veefkind was intent on pursuing a career in law enforcement. With a high school diploma and Bachelor of Arts Degree, he made application to various police forces, including the RCMP. His aspirations materialized when, on September 13, 1985, he swore allegiance to her Majesty the Queen and was engaged with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Cst. Veefkind's first post was Vermilion Detachment, where he enthusiastically carried out his duties, displaying dogged determination and tenacity in his peace officer role. His rapid rate of progress made him a highly developed investigator at a very junior age. He thrived on a heavy workload, and tackled each new assignment with keen interest. Cst. Veefkind transferred to Red Earth Creek in 1988, and continued to display a solid and sound work ethic. Upon completing his tenure at this limited duration post, he accepted a transfer to Grande Prairie Municipal Detachment. Cst. Veefkind continued to provide a consistently high standard of service, carrying the largest workload of all members at this large detachment. Cst. Veefkind's promising career came to a sudden halt on March 11, 1993, when he was killed on duty at approximately 0315 hrs. in a head-on collision with a semi-trailer unit. Cst. Veefkind was traveling eastbound on Highway #34, approximately 3 kilometers east of the Village of Bezanson, Alberta. For some indeterminate reason, his police cruiser crossed a double solid line and struck a westbound tractor/trailer unit. He died on impact. Cst. Veefkind was single at the time of his death. Following a
memorial service in Grande Prairie, Cst. Brent Harold Veefkind was interred
in British Columbia, where his immediate family resides.
